Coates 1989 KING JOHN'S HILL (1) in East Worldham, (2) in Kingsclere Both these places are associated by tradition with John's hunting. He is recorded as being at East Worldham twice in the first decade of the 13th century (VCH II: 518), and certainly hunted in Freemantle Park, Kingsclere, where folklore places his lodge on the S slope of this hill. It is, or was, otherwise known as 'Cottington Hill' after Lord Cottington of Hanworth, whose estate here was sequestered by Parliament in the Commonwealth (VCH IV: 252-3). |
